I had a bad stroke last Saturday but with the quick medical treatment to go in and grab the clot in my brain, I now have virtually NO lingering symptoms side affects. On medications but lifestyle changes are important. The FIRST YouTube videos I am catching up on are YOURS! They always make me smile, chuckle, cringe or hoot! Thanks for the great content. Of course you can't "catch" deafness, but you cannot say that they're enjoying every aspect of the life we're given, speaking of music specifically. 2. I owe nobody an apology, and I will not give one. This community shuns those that (signs from my own teachers deaf friend) "Thinking like a hearing person." for even wanting to get cochlear implants, which seems to me like cultish behavior. 3. I will admit I havent been exposed to their community as much as others have been, and I agree they see the world in a totally different aspect. I was harsh with my comments, but only because (from my position) they're a community of gate-keepers, and "thinking like a hearing person" is extremely segregating and insulting to me as a hearing person. In all, you have a good point when it comes to my position, but I will not apologize for commenting on what I've seen. Distancing yourself from close friends because they want to experience a new part of the world that God's given us is vile behavior. Quick add: my mother was also incredibly involved with deaf culture during the 80's, helping running a deaf comedy routine called "quiet zone theatre". Just another reference for my deaf culture knowledge.

Deafness isn't a disease! You don't miss something you never had! And, as a hearing person, YOU are missing the full beauty and complexity of the world as someone who only perceives the world visually! There IS literally a difference in one's visual experience. Not to mention the beauty and nuances of fluency in American Sign Language. As a hearing person, I would probably miss some sounds, but, for someone who was born deaf or hard-of-hearing, what you wrote is nothing but insulting. And, a complete non-issue for them. You may not understand their POV, but most hearing people don't. You literally can't, having been born hearing. But, you must respect and accept theirs! You say you've been exposed to "deaf culture stuff". Clearly NOT, as one ASL class (even if your teacher was D/deaf, one person cannot represent the entire community) and your father working at a CI manufacturer does NOT expose you to the culture in any way shape or form. No more than me taking one class in the Japanese language educates me about their culture! You need to meet many D/HoH people and talk to them and hear their stories. After a few years, you might, just MIGHT begin to understand D/deaf culture. You owe them a sincere apology for your statement here. You're naive, uneducated, and presumptuous. I'm sorry, but it's just arrogant to assume you know anything about Deaf Culture and Deaf perspective based on your one class and your father's job! PS Deafness is not labeled a "disease" either.

@Darren New sometimes. In the disability community that's called "Disability Porn". When the CI is first turned on, what they hear is completely different than the sounds we hear. It sounds kind of like when you call a telephone that's connected to a fax machine. Just static and piercing shrieks. It some time for the brain to learn to recognize this stimuli as sounds and interpret them more like we hear them. Often when babies cry it's because it's scary and it's overwhelming. Imagine you've been in a silent place for a long time and suddenly someone turns the speakers up to MAXIMUM on an orchestra warming up. Each instrument just make noises, not music and it conflicts with all the others and it's just an overwhelming cacophony of NOISE. Sometimes older people cry because of similar reasons. They expect it to sound "normal", like what we hear, and it's not. Sometimes it IS emotional as they anticipate being able to appreciate all the sounds we tell them are so beautiful. But, CI's are a bit controversial in the Deaf community (see my reply below) There are many risks, some irreversible. It's a very personal decision.

@SKRUBL0RD they're called cochlear implants. Like any medical device there are pros and definitely cons, so each person has to decide if they are willing to accept the risks. One part is irreversible. Because the CI is connected directly to the auditory nerve to the brain, the connection from the ear to the auditory nerve is severed. Meaning they will never be able to use hearing aids again if they choose to. Also, I'm an ASL Interpreter for 40 years and in the D/deaf &Hard of Hearing community. I've never EVER heard of anybody being "too proud". It's a complex issue, with complex emotions. First, if the person has grown up in the Deaf community and in Deaf culture (yes, that is a "thing". Just like any group of people who share the same language, they form a social group, a community (with smaller subgroups within) and like any culture, have their own expectations of behavior within the community. Which is all related to being people who take in the world solely visually, not auditorily. That is too multifaceted to explain more here. If they are from a Deaf family, the perception is that suddenly becoming a "hearing" person will separate you in several ways, some subtle and others less so. Most Deaf people have grown up being condescended to and treated as if they are children or intellectually impaired. The implication being that they aren't acceptable as they are/" not good enough". A deaf person getting a CI may be seen as making a judgmental statement about those who don't. ie "Now I'm better than you." I know several people who've gotten a CI as children (parents' decision, obviously) and who have them removed later. They usually say they are clearly not a Hearing person and aren't seen that way, but they aren't part of the Deaf community either. The "no mans land" in between isn't a choice they want to continue. There are many other nuances to this decision, but I'm going to stop here. I've written so much because I'm trying to educate Hearing people about the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. It will make everyone's life so much easier and more comfortable. Thanks for your comment that gave me this opportunity! 👍🙌😎

I just want to point out how good the subtitle glasses could be for travelling abroad. If you put the speech through a translator you'd be halfway to perfecting conversation. ...unless everyone in the world gets a pair and then language barriers would be a thing of the past!

@Kunjukunju nil Why can she withstand it though? We played around with such a device, and the point where everyone couldn't fight it anymore was highly variable. Trained people were able to hold up quite a bit longer, Fitness/pumper folks on the other hand were just average no matter the muscle mass. You're right though, it's not about pain tolerance but more about the strength of command you have over your muscles. It's literally like fighting a cramp by willpower. Winner was a friend who boulders and climbes with a burning passion which doesn't seem surprising though quite a few put money down on the fattest arms.
