To the couple who's dog ate their money....I believe a bank may be able to replace the cash. If I recall, from a documentary I saw long ago, damaged bills can be traced, traded in, and replaced with undamaged bills.

Why people still use cash is a mystery for me, especially that much. I never have cash.

This actually happened to my sister once. Her dogs got into about $5000 cash that she was saving up for a horse. She called the bank and they said as long as you can make out one of the serial numbers on each bill, they can be exchanged. She was able to get all the money back.

@Keiichi81 yes, people know that being blind would be hard but as a disabled person I can tell you that a large magority of people don't tend to really grasp exactly how a disability effects a person's life. They get the concept of 'you can't see things if you're blind' or 'you can't walk if you're in a wheelchair' but they will also vastly underestimate just how much harder that makes even the most basic actions that most people take for granted so much that they don't even think about what is required to do it. As disabled people we receive more ignorant and harmful comments and actions than you would believe and most of it is because people just plain don't really properly understand disability, they just have a few vague generalisations and stereotypes in their minds about it instead. Disability awareness projects like this can actually help people to think through more of the implications on a person's life of having a disability (in this case blindness or being partially sighted) in a way that most people don't tend to otherwise, and it can help people to have more empathy and understanding so it really is worth doing. The actual experience (as in the people actually in this video going into this shop and feeling the confusion and frustration and everything of the situation) is definitely more powerful than just watching it though so I can understand how it could feel more 'well yeah of course' and less 'wow, I never thought of it that way' to some people just watching it

​@Ken Bro yeh it is cool :) I have no idea how they got it durable, a weakness has been found recently that might give clues, they don't like extreme heat. If ironed for extended periods on really high, or if put into an oven, they shrink to around half size, so that might help explain to you what type of plastic they are (Aussies just thought that was cool & fun & started doing it on mass just for kicks, Mint wasn't impressed & said they won't be replacing notes people have deliberately damaged lol) Other than that, they'll withstand most stuff. Years ago, they used to occasionally rip/get sticky tape down the middle, but I haven't seen that for a long time, so either they've been strengthened, or circulation removal for damaged notes has been improved & they did that far less than the paper ones did! I always keep a $50 hidden in my wallet for emergencies/in case I accidentally run myself out of visible cash. I've had the same note there for probably a decade at times, folded in 4 & tucked in the section with my cards on mass, such as library cards, blockbuster card when they still existed, loyalty shop cards etc etc, so the note would get rubbed & well & truly flattened. If I had to use it, it would have obvious crease marks in it, but it was still totally fine. Not uncommon to occasionally get a note given as change that has crease marks in it too & people torture those notes to flatten them out, scrapping them along objects in the opposite direction etc (especially if waiting in a queue to pay for something, with a single note in your hand & so bored), they withstand it all :) I've seen origami creations with the notes too, although tbh, it's beyond me how they manage to get them to crease & fold for that, would take a LOT of work to flatten them in that way! People from countries like America though, often like the bright colours & play with them with stuff like that :) It's a CSIRO invention, they've come up with some pretty amazing stuff over the years! Wifi is another invention of theirs. Biggest problem with the money was never durability, it was getting the ink to stick. First batch they made, it didn't! Those $10 notes are now worth a fortune, cause they're so rare. They were pulled pretty quickly as the ink began to run. Next batch it worked well - and was tested rigorously, with people dipping them in everything they could think of to try to take the ink off & replicate the results of the first batch. They also have stuff like flying bird holographs (wings flap & change colour as you move the note), 3d images, slightly raised numbers, microprint about the people featured on the notes, UV black light visible birds & serial numbers & print years & heaps more security features. Almost a work of art in many ways, but something we tend to pay very little attention to. $5 is purple, $10 is blue, $20 is red, $50 is gold, $100 is green & the polymer has a really distinct feel, so we barely even look at them. Even those that in other countries would need to be looking for counterfeits etc, in Australia really don't have to bother looking at them, they'll instantly notice subconsciously if something's off. Fake coins are much easier to slip in than our notes are! (NZ coins in particular do tend to slip into our currency at times & circulate within it for a while before being pulled, although not so much nowadays with self service checkouts etc that detect & reject them)

Look, people can do whatever the fuck they want with their money, I just think that if the purpose is helping raise awareness to the blind there mightve been better ways, I mean, it could be cool if anything bought was paid not to the owners but to a blind people donation, make it a store that helps the blind when you buy something, making that an indirect way someone can donate, but that would also mean they would need to pay for more product and in the end you're simply wasting money by having the product in the middle.

But still, how do blind people purchase groceries? There is probably outside help in most cases, but what if there isn't? Most products I know don't use Braille, except for medicine and such.
