As a former US Sailor, I told my brother after I got back that if he even thought about playing any of the alarms we had as a joke to wake me up, I'd kick his ass. I actually did have a moment once when I was watching Battlestar Galactica and only half paying attention when during a scene where all the pilots were in their ready room and the captain walks in one person calls out "Captain on deck!" and I immediately felt myself coming to attention. Took a heartbeat or two to go back to remembering that I had been out for a year and I didn't need to do it anymore.

Fun fact! In the Netherlands they applied the breaks-on-shopping carts system about 7 years ago. Everyone got so annoyed and frustrated with them, especially because it's hard to find good parking spots and have to park across the street. It created dangerous situations when oblivious people tried to cross the street and the wheel blocked halfway. Needless to say, they have disappeared from our supermarkets.

Wow. They're meant to set up a digital fence around the boundary of the store and paint it on the concrete. Every store that has used it in the US has done this for like 20 years. We only get some problems when someone parks at the edge of a large parking lot and the fence ends like 15 feet away from the edge of the lot.

Having been in the military myself, it's honestly fascinating to realize how well it works. I got to the point that when the alarms go off in the middle of the night and they play the man-overboard alarm as a drill, I would be up, out of bed, on my feet and in the process of putting my shoes on before I was even aware I was awake.

0:45 I have had a very interesting experience with one of these... I went to return a cart from inside the store (it was empty), and accidentally went out an entrance door. The wheels immediately locked up and I was really embarrassed. Luckily there was an employee super close that could take the cart off my hands :P

Those shopping trolleys have been used here in the UK for years. The brakes on the wheels lock when they cart goes over a magnetic strip on the floor, usually around the outside the car parks and usually and red. Fun fact, you can actually just lift the carts over the lines to stop the brakes from activating.

@JamesJamersonIsAGod exactly. These have been around for a while. We had a grocery store right across our apartment complex and we knew exactly how far to take the carts before they would lock. One trick was to carry the cart for a feet across the magnetic strips that causes it to lock on the floor. Another solution was to pull the cart backwards. We would use the carts to play a bunch of different games when I was kid.

I remember we would pull those carts backwards when the wheels would lock. This is not a new thing.

The solution is simple. In Europe, you have to put a coin in first to unlock it, and to get your coin back you need to put it back and lock it again. We've never had this issue.

As someone who served, hearing that while you're deadass asleep if the most terrifying thing ever.

Those shopping carts that apply the breaks will be left far away from the store GUARANTEED when people forcefully pull them to their car but won't bother pushing them an inch back towards the store with the brakes on.

@SirPano85 I know ALDI has stores worldwide, I was just saying they're the only store I had seen (at the time) here in Australia that have coin locking trolleys. I have since seen two other stores with coin trolleys, one was an independent grocery store who use them on shallow tray trolleys (though they also have coinless deep tray trolleys right next to them making the coin ones basically pointless) and the other was a liqueur store which again is pointless as another store right next to them on the same building complex have coinless trolleys stored within the same trolley bays within the car park. But I digress my main point is the system is annoying as it requires someone to have a coin with them, which it is in an ever increasing cashless world whether it's a real coin or not doesn't matter, and ultimately the system has limited usefulness as it doesn't prevent stealing and doesn't negate the need of having an employee retrieve trolleys from the car park (as return bays are typically put within them, especially here in Australia). The only real use is limiting the potential risk of damage to vehicles from rogue abandoned trolleys crashing into them as there will be less rogue trolleys just lying around, but whether they would (and should) be held liable is a debatable topic dependent upon the situation. There are also other more customer friendly methods they could reduce this risk of damage without the need for coins, for example they could extend the wheel locking to have a sensor in the handle of the trolley that locks the wheels when no one is gripping onto it (with some kind of unlock mechanism for stacked trolley retrieval like contacts between the trolleys to send the signal) which has the added advantage of reducing the risk of a loaded trolley being able to roll away from someone.

The trick is with the shopping carts, you lift up the front and walk it on the back wheels when it's locked. I worked at a grocery store so that's how you moved it when you got a locked cart. There was a cart unlocker you used to unlock the wheels.
